Layer Painter
Layer Painter combines software with a projector focused on a canvas. It turns a chosen image into a selected number of colours, calculates paint recipes from paint libraries, and projects a mask for each colour onto the painting surface.
From an image to a painting
- Choose a photograph or digital image you have permission to use.
- Select a colour palette.
- Use the calculated paint recipes to prepare the colours.
- Paint the area shown by each projected mask, then move to the next colour.
Developed and used in-house
Layer Painter is working and has been used to create paintings in John’s own practice. It has not yet been tested with independent public users. He is interested in discussing potential uses with artists and educators as the project develops.
The software, projector, and physical setup need to work together. The best way to supply and support the system is still being explored.
